Chapter Thirty

Black Lilly

Zack held his hand out in friendship. “Then come with us. We can get you to Lord Gwynn and he can give you some better gear and provide you with somewhere to live, at least, if you promise to aid him against his foes.”

Amy hovered behind Zack, her fingers opening and closing. She unsurprisingly wanted to kill Ivan (and loot his corpse!).

But if what Presela had seen in the cauldron had any truth to it, Ivan might be important. Zack understood Amy had her reasons for hating Ivan, but if Zack could put aside his hate, then she could as well.

Besides, Ivan might have the key to Fawkes’s lair on him right now, squirreled away in his Inventory. The key would be a special item, maybe even soul bound to Ivan, so there was always the chance that if they killed the man, the item would disappear and they would lose any chance of being able to enter Fawkes’s lair through the secret rear entrance.

Better to have Ivan on their side, where he could be of use.

Ivan studied Zack’s extended hand, his sword now sheathed. His expression was unreadable.

Zack had no idea what the flower meant to Ivan and assumed it had some sentimental value to him.

The man wasn’t a bad tank, or so Zack had heard. He just rubbed people the wrong way. Likely, Ivan had a shitty real life out there in the City and took that anger into the game with him and let it all out on everyone else. Hated by everyone, even the NPC courtesans he paid to sleep with him, he had no friends, no allies and for all Zack knew, Ivan might have no one out in the real world either.

I still don’t know what you see in this pitiful creature, Lilly said in Zack’s mind.

Can’t I feel sorry for a man down on his luck?

If that why you’re doing this? Lilly sounded skeptical.

Zack ground his teeth. You can read my thoughts. You tell me.

You want him as a personal ally, one who will stand with you if my mistress, Gwynn or Fawkes suddenly decides they don’t need you anymore and tries to kill you to eliminate a rival.

He glanced at the shapeshifter. Do you have a problem with that?

If Gwynn had a brain, he would be thinking the same thing about needing allies of his own. Zack didn’t fear the dragon betraying him. The real threat in their alliance was Malghana and the wild card that was Fawkes.

Lilly’s face tightened. No. But I don’t want conflict between you and my mistress or for you to think she is out to get you.

Then don’t tell her about Ivan.

She’s going to find out about him one day.

Fine. Then tell her that I felt sorry for Ivan and wanted to help him. That way, she’ll just think I’m a weak idiot rather than making plans for my own long-term survival.

Lilly gave him a forced smile. Do what you will, and I will keep it from my mistress.
